A story where selfishness may be the answer

Beyond the borders of great cities, far from the towering walls of the Inquisition or the grand desks of the alchemy colleges, lies a different reality. Village elders agree on few things, but the existence of the "Runners" is one of them.

There exists a plane dedicated to Blood—a realm where the crimson fluid serves as currency, sustenance for some creatures, and nourishment for others. No one knows where it began, but it has long been known that certain entities ruling the Blood Plane abduct mortals. They transform these mortals into prey by grafting strange artifacts beneath their skin before setting them free once more. That is when their macabre sport begins: each entity dispatches its own hunters to pursue the new quarry. No one knows what the wager is; they only know that one must not aid a Runner. Rumors circulate of villages that helped a wounded Runner, only to be razed to the ground the very next day. The lesson is clear: if a Runner appears, bar your doors and windows, or whatever follows in their wake will destroy everything.

Misfortune and surprise can cross anyone's path—not just that of adventurers. Such was the case when a wounded man crossed their path, abandoned not far from the main road leading to a small village. A strange artifact appeared to have been recently grafted beneath his skin.
