Three quick stories, all of them traumatic

The continent of Elyssia is a place that has punished magic and its practitioners for years—at least across most of its territory. Yet, there remain corners where underground mages can find refuge. Some attribute this to the discovery of blood mages, a faction long thought extinct. Others, aware of the true history, maintain that the real cause dates back to a much more distant past. Whatever the origin of this war—now a cold one—the situation remains unchanged. In its wake, libraries were shuttered or burned, entire lineages vanished from the records, and the use of magic was strictly regulated or outright banned. In modern-day Elyssia, magic is tolerated only when it serves the military or the State; anything else takes place in the shadows, invites punishment, or is officially denied.

From those ashes, alchemy emerged, ushering in a renaissance where anyone could become an alchemist. Farmers no longer go hungry due to a poor harvest, soldiers no longer fear infection from battle wounds, and the populace no longer lives in terror of plagues as they once did. Alchemy has allowed most sectors to be reborn—or reinvented. Cities appear to be thriving, yet fear lurks beneath the calm. Rogue sorcerers vanish, only to reappear later, hanging from the trees.

Alchemy has become so widespread that it no longer focuses solely on its origins; it now encompasses the study of other approaches to the discipline and the mysteries surrounding Elyssia’s history. Yet, all this progress comes at a price.
