A short story where every decision matters

Beneath cities, abandoned fortresses, and ancient sealed complexes, factions (or sectors) of alchemists operate, seeking to recreate—or perfect—the techniques of ancient empires. Not out of nostalgia, but out of ambition: to create soldiers, living weapons, and bodies that fear neither pain nor death. To them, people do not simply disappear; they are recycled for more productive uses, according to their vision of society. The missing are used as test subjects in live alchemical experiments. Most die. Some survive... transformed. Others become something that can no longer be called human, dwarf, or elf... The authorities are not always complicit, but turning a blind eye is easier than facing the truth—because, ultimately, the College of Alchemists has a presence (and power) everywhere. The characters are not heroes. Not yet. Their journey is about to begin, or has just started. They are ordinary people: novice adventurers, nameless mercenaries, young dreamers seeking adventure. The only thing binding them together is the spirit of adventure. Perhaps due to inexperience or optimism, they have fallen into a trap. Whether in a seemingly friendly tavern, an inn run by a charming elderly couple, or while camping in the middle of nowhere, they have been abducted. Perhaps they let their guard down, or the night watchman succumbed to exhaustion. But now they know the rumors about people vanishing are true. Now, they are among the missing. And when they wake up, they will have to fight for their lives as never before.
